Wulingyuan & the Avatar Mountains

We had 4 nights in Wulingyuan to explore the incredible park which features more than 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars, many over 200 metres (660 ft) in height, which were the inspiration for the floating mountains in James Cameron’s movie Avatar.

We stayed in the “Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan to Shangguang Luxury Hotel” in a room overlooking the river with the mountain park in the background.

We didn’t get to see the mists swirling through the limestone peaks. It was not the right weather, but it would have been a spectacular experience.

The plum blossoms were starting to appear on the wild plum trees in the park. We were to see many more spectacular displays of blossoms in the next few days.
